Fort Worth, Texas :: Family :: Iowa Photographers

The second day in Fort Worth my sweet cousin Nissa invited all the relatives to her house for lunch and an afternoon of fun. Nissa and her husband have 4 children- including tripletts- so their backyard is stocked with all the things kids love. All the little ones spent their time swinging, playing tag, having sword fights, taking wagon rides and much much more.  My kids thought the 50 degree weather felt like summer and ran around barefoot til nightfall. Just before sunset I took a few portraits of my cousin Erin and her beautiful boys too.

We all had an amazing time. Thank you Nissa for letting us all invade your home!

Fort Worth, Texas :: Gam’s House :: Iowa Photographers

This past week I decided at 8pm Sunday evening to head to Texas to visit my grandma (whom we have always called Gam) the very next morning at 6am. Chris was unable to come but I decided to be daring and bring all 4 children. We made the drive there in just 13 hours. It had been almost 2 years since I had been down to visit. Seeing my Aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins and Gam was so refreshing. I stayed up into the early morning hours listening to my aunts tell stories about relatives I never had the privilege of knowing while scanning over a hundred family photographs.

The kids had a blast playing with their second cousins. They stayed out til well after dark playing tag and hide and seek. I am happy to know that they too will have fond memories of visiting their great grandma.

My grandparents had this house built in the 1950s. They raised 6 children here. I have lovely memories of visiting their home as a child. I used to sleep in my dad’s old bedroom. My cousin’s and I would spend the day exploring the house inside and out. We climbed trees and played on the giant aged  slide and swing set. However, as a child I never noticed how awesome my grandparent’s mid century modern home was/is. The lines are simply fantastic. Window light is everywhere. The transition between the indoors and out is seamless. The pocket doors, exposed wood beams and brick walls all add to it’s appeal. I would love to find photographs of how it looked when it was first built.

Fort Worth, Texas :: Cousin’s Barbecue :: Iowa Photographers

Last week I made an impromptu trip to Fort Worth, Texas for a much needed visit with family. After a 13 hour car ride Cousin’s Barbecue is one of our first stops. Cousin’s has been a family favorite since it opened in 1983. My grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary was even held there. Not only does Cousin’s hold wonderful memories for us but the food is incredible. My personal favorite is the fried okra. Do yourself a favor and make sure you stop next time you’re in Fort Worth.

Personal Project :: Des Moines, Iowa :: Iowa Photographers

Des Moines is a fantastic place to live. Despite the climate I think we’ve got a great city to call our home. We decided that during the winter months we’d try our hand at a personal project that would “show off” the Des Moines we know and love. The goal was to approach local businesses we frequent and shoot the place up.  Not just simple snapshots but really try our hardest to encapsulate what makes these places unique and such a good find. We’ve been on a restaurant theme lately. Azalea, Fong’s and Centro were just recently photographed and we’ve got a list of gift shops and stores yet to cover. After it is all said and done we’re creating a personal album of “Des Moines” just for us. A good keepsake to remember all the great times we’ve had at these places.

I want to thank Mike Hutchison, Gwen Page, Chris Diebel and George Formaro for allowing us in to photograph these deliciously great places. We’ve got some wonderful stuff to share soon!

Here’s a few shots from Sarah:
